Sylhet theatre director Enamul Munir passes away

DHAKA, June 1, 2025 (BSS) - Enamul Munir, a prominent theatre personality and cultural activist from Sylhet, passed away late Saturday night at the age of 63.

He breathed his last at a private hospital in the city here around 12.45 am.

According to family sources, Enamul Munir suddenly felt ill around midnight and was immediately taken to the hospital where on-duty doctor declared him dead shortly after being admitted. 

His death has left a deep void in the cultural community of the region. Shamsul Basit Shero, fellow theatre activist and a member of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Council, expressed profound sorrow at Munir's passing.

Munir's funeral prayer was held today following the Zuhr prayers at the premises of Kumarpara Jame Mosque in Sylhet.

A respected actor, playwright and director, Enamul Munir made significant contributions to drama productions at Bangladesh Betar.
 
He was the founding general secretary of Sammilito Sangskritik Jote in Sylhet and also served as the general secretary of the theatre group Kothakoli, where he helped shape the region's modern theatre movement.
