Market slides under weight of large-cap losses

DHAKA, Sept 6, 2026 (BSS) - Stocks today started the week on a negative note as a sharp fall in large-cap stocks dragged the benchmark index lower, amid cautious investor sentiment and growing concerns over prevailing crisis and its impact on corporate earnings.

The DSEX, the broad index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), plunged 103.6 points to settle at 5,558 points, compared with 5,662 points in the previous trading session, hitting a two-and-a-half-month low.

The market came under selling pressure from the outset, with investors heavily offloading large-cap shares, which weighed significantly on the overall market.

The selling pressure intensified in the latter half of the session, resulting in broad-based declines across the trading board as investors adopted a risk-averse stance.

Meanwhile, market turnover also declined amid the weakening sentiment, falling 24.4 percent to Tk 5.5 billion from Tk 7.2 billion in the previous session.

Textile stocks accounted for the highest share of turnover at 28.8 percent, followed by General Insurance at 14.2 percent and Pharmaceuticals at 11.2 percent.

All sectors posted negative returns, with General Insurance and Textile each declining 4.2 percent, while Paper fell 3.8 percent.

Of the 395 issues traded, 19 advanced, 343 declined and 33 remained unchanged.

The Chattogram Stock Exchange (CSE) also ended in negative territory. Its Selective Categories' Index (CSCX) declined by 88.1 points, while the All Share Price Index (CASPI) lost 171.0 points.
