Australia edge ahead after 18-wicket day despite Shoriful's six-for

DHAKA, Aug 22, 2026 (BSS)- Australia dominated Day 1 of the second and final Test against Bangladesh, thanks to a six-wicket haul by fast bowler Mitchell Starc and a fighting half-century by Cameron Green at Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay today.

Starc claimed 6 for 12 to skittle Bangladesh out for just 64, before Green made a laborious 51 not out to help Australia reach 165-8 at stumps, helping the side to take 101 runs lead on a day when 18 wickets were fallen.

Australia captain Pat Cummins won the toss and this time opted to bowl which worked well for his team with Starc scything down Bangladesh impeccably with the new ball.

In his first three overs, he cut down the half of the Bangladesh batting order, leaving the visitors to 5-12. Amongst the five batters, openers Shadman Islam and Tanzid Hasan Tamim, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and Liton Das were out for duck.

After scoring 101 in the first innings of famous Darwin Test which Bangladesh won by nine wickets to create a history, Tanzid now got two duck in consecutive innings. For Liton Das too, it was second straight duck, meaning he is yet to score any run in his first ever Australia tour.

Cummins however rattled the stump of veteran Mushfiqur Rahim for 5 as Bangladesh slumped to 21-6, which raised a possibility to break the lowest score ever in Test cricket-the 26 by New Zealand against England in 1955.

The stubbornness from Mehidy Hasan who scored 11 off 51 quelled the fear of being all out below 26 but Cummins and Josh Hazlewood kept Bangladesh pushing as the visitors looked to be on the verge of being all out by their lowest total in Test history. Bangladesh's lowest total is 43 which they made against West Indies in 2018.

It looked all possible when Bangladesh were left to 39-9 but Shoriful and Taijul Islam shared an important 25 runs for the last wicket to help Bangladesh let the fear go.

Shoriful made team-best 14 before being out by Starc while Taijul was not out on 11.

Shoriful then made immediate impact with the bowl to make Australian life hell. He removed Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne before Taskin took the wicket of Matt Renshaw.

Steven Smith and Cameron Green shared all important 69 runs from the fourth wicket, a partnership that proved to be decisive in giving Australia the edge on Day 1.

Shoriful broke through with the wicket of Smith who made 42 before sparking a sensational collapse that saw Australia lost four wickets for three runs.

Shoriful was the wrecker-in-chief and completed his five-for with the wicket of Cummins, bowling 8.4 overs, which was the second fastest five-for by a Bangladesh bowler behind Taijul who completed five-for in 6.5 overs against west Indies in Chattogram in 2018.

Shoriful then took the wicket of Starc to finish the day with 6-35 in 12 overs, making it the best figure by a Bangladesh bowler on Australian soil for the time being, eclipsing Hasan Mahmud's historical 6-55 in the first Test.

However Green and Nathan Lyon saw off the day with luck and pluck to keep Australia's nose ahead on tricky wicket.
