DHAKA, July 29, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Tamim Iqbal announced a split captaincy structure for the national team by appointing Liton Das as captain for the ODI format.

He replaced Mehidy Hasan Miraz as captain in this format.

In doing so, the board gave Liton the responsibility to lead the side in two formats of white-ball cricket. He has already been leading the side in T20 format.

Najmul Hossain Shanto continues leading the side in Test cricket.

Tamim said the board had approved the decision as they believe the arrangement would better serve the team's long-term interests.

Towhid Hridoy has been named the white-ball vice-captain, while the red-ball vice-captain will remain unchanged.

Explaining the decision to relieve Mehidy Hasan Miraz of the captaincy, Tamim praised his leadership but said the all-rounder was needed more as a performer.

"Miraz has done an excellent job as captain in recent series, but we want him to focus fully on his batting and bowling and return to the level we expect from him," Tamim said, adding that the decision was taken after discussions with the player and with mutual consent.

He also indicated that Miraz could return to a leadership role in the future, citing his significant contribution to Bangladesh cricket.

Tamim said injury management was a major factor behind opting against three different captains across the formats. 

He revealed that the growing number of injuries among the country's fast bowlers had made workload management increasingly important.

"When there are three captains, each wants to field the best bowlers in his format, which puts extra pressure on the players. With separate white-ball and red-ball captains, they can coordinate better and manage workloads more effectively," he said.

Tamim informed that following Bangladesh's recent tour of Zimbabwe, he met with the coaching staff and players to formulate a six-month roadmap aimed at improving the national team's performances.
