DPL title race goes down to wire as Mohammedan suffer defeat

DHAKA, June 8, 2026 (BSS) - The Dhaka Premier League (DPL) title race has
become wide open after Mohammedan Sporting Club suffered a surprise defeat in
the 10th round.

Mohammedan's five-wicket loss to Dhaka Leopards at BKSP has left three teams
- Mohammedan, Abahani Limited and Prime Bank Cricket Club - locked on 16
points each with one round remaining.

Playing without several key players, including Towhid Hridoy due to national
team and Bangladesh 'A' commitments, Mohammedan posted 225-8 after electing
to bat first. Veteran batter Mushfiqur Rahim top-scored with 68.

Dhaka Leopards chased down the target in just 34.3 overs, powered by opener
Jawad Abrar's 66 and a match-winning unbeaten 99 from Mominul Haque.

Leopards also beat Abahani Limited in the first match, meaning they defeated
country two powerhouses in a season.

The result has created a fascinating title equation ahead of the final round.

Abahani can secure the championship outright by defeating arch-rivals
Mohammedan in their last match.

Prime Bank, meanwhile, must beat Dhaka Leopards and hope Mohammedan defeat
Abahani. In the event of a tie on points, head-to-head results will determine
the champion. Abahani hold the advantage over Prime Bank, while Prime Bank
are ahead of Mohammedan in that equation.

Abahani kept their title hopes alive with a 26-run victory over Gazi Group
Cricketers.

Mahidul Islam Ankon led the batting effort with 66 as Abahani posted 221
before being all out in 48.1 overs.

Despite being reduced to 136-9 in 33.4 overs, Gazi Group threatened an upset
through a last-wicket stand of 73 between Azizul Hakim (41) and Mohammad
Rubel, but eventually folded for 184 in 44.1 overs. Mahfuzur Rabbi claimed
three wickets for the winners.

Prime Bank also remained firmly in contention after securing an 18-run
victory over Bashundhara Strikers.

Despite being bowled out for only 160, Prime Bank defended the total
successfully, with Abu Haider Rony starring by scoring 58 runs and taking
three wickets.

The day's standout performance, however, came from Legends of Rupganj's
Habibur Rahman, who blasted a 45-ball century against City Club at the ULAB
ground to register the fastest hundred in Bangladesh's List A history.

Habibur eventually smashed 130 off just 58 deliveries, striking eight fours
and 13 sixes, as Rupganj amassed 322 runs before being dismissed.

City Club responded with 248, thanks largely to Sadiqur Rahman's 101, but
still fell 74 runs short.

In another match, Rupganj Tigers Cricket Club edged Agrani Bank Cricket Club
by two wickets. Chasing 266, Rupganj Tigers reached the target riding on
Mohammad Abdullah's 87-run knock.

Elsewhere, Gulshan Cricket Club were awarded a walkover victory against
Brothers Union, who continued their boycott of the league over unpaid salary
issues.
