DHAKA, May 14, 2026 (BSS) — Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has attained a career-best 23rd position in the Test Batting Rankings after helping Bangladesh win the first match of their World Test Championship series against Pakistan at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. 

Shanto, who recorded his fifth Test century as captain to go past the previous record of four centuries by former captain Mushfiqur Rahim, has advanced 16 slots in the batters’ list and is now placed joint-23rd with Pakistan batter Babar Azam, the ICC said in a statement.

 Shanto struck of 101 and 87 in that match to win the Player of the Match award as Bangladesh won the game by 104 runs. 

Mushfiqur, who scored 71 and 22, has also gained in the latest update. The former captain has inched up two spots to 26th while Mominul Haque’s scores of 91 and 56 see him gallop 12 places to reach 35th position.

Pakistan debutants Abdullah Fazal and Azan Awais have entered the rankings in 75th and 82nd positions, respectively. Abdullah notched a century in the first innings and Azan got half-centuries in both innings.

The Test bowling rankings see Bangladesh spinner Taijul Islam move from 16th to 13th position after picking two wickets in each innings while fast bowler Nahid Rana’s crucial haul of 5- 40 in the second innings has enabled him to gain five slots and reach 64th position.

For Pakistan, seam bowler Mohammad Abbas has re-entered the rankings in 28th position following a return of 5-92 in the first innings.

Bangladesh’s emphatic victory in the first of two Tests has lifted them above Pakistan in the ICC World Test Championship standings. 

Although it was their first win in three matches, they have moved up to sixth place with 44.44 percentage points as they have a draw and a loss in an earlier series against Sri Lanka.

Pakistan now have two losses from three matches following a 1-1 result against South Africa.
