Nissanka dominates Bangladesh bowlers to put SL in control

DHAKA, June 26, 2025 (BSS)—Opener Pathum Nissanka hits his second straight century as Sri Lanka dominated Bangladesh bowlers to hurl the baton in the second and final cricket Test today at Sinhalese Sports Club ground in Colombo today.

Nissanka followed his career-best 187 in the first Test, with 146 not out, guiding Sri Lanka to 290-2 at stumps.

Thanks to Nissanka who shared two big partnerships with fellow opener Lahiru Udara and veteran Dinesh Chandimal, Sri Lanka now took 43 runs lead with eight wickets hands.

Bangladesh were bowled out for 247 in its first innings.

Both Udara and Chandimal are unfortunate not to have reached the respectively milestone against a Bangladesh bowling that even failed to create any genuine chance.

Udara was out for 46, four runs short of his maiden half-century while Chandimal missed out his 17th Test ton by seven runs.

He was undone after trying to reverse-sweep late in the day to fall for 93 that gave Bangladesh some respite in a completely disastrous day.

The Lankan openers cashed in on Bangladesh pace bowlers’ erratic line and length to give the side a dominant start with Nissanka starting off with a back foot cover drive for four off the first ball.

And he raised his fourth century off 154 balls in similar fashion, punching pacer Nahid Rana for a boundary through point.

In between he barely offered any chance and ended the day 146 off 238, hammering 18 boundaries. A maiden double century what he missed in the first Test by 13 runs, however, beckons him, on Day 3.

Parabath Jayasuriya who came to the pitch as night watchman was on 5 at stumps.

After the pacers leaked runs, Bangladesh got some control through the spin of Taijul Islam, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Nayeem Hasan.

But Udara, playing his only second Test, played sweep shots relentlessly in a bid to make the spinners disarray. He, however, missed few sweeps, one of which almost cost his wicket as Bangladesh reviewed an umpire decision, only to be turned down by DRS.

Taijul eventually got the wicket of Udara, this time with a successful review of leg-before, bringing an end to the 88-run partnership between him and  Nissanka.

Nissanka who barely offered any chance got able partner in Chandimal as the duo further kept Bangladesh bowlers at bay to take their second wicket partnership past 100 before Tea session.

Nayeem Hasan broke the partnership by dismissing Chandimal after  he added 194 runs with Nissanka.

Bangladesh earlier survived 49 balls after resuming the Day 2 at 220-8. Taijul Islam scored 33 and was instrumental in helping the side add 27 runs to their overnight total.

Asitha Fernando gave the side breakthrough in just fourth over of the day, dismissing Ebadot Hossain for 8.

Taijul was the last batter out when Sonal Dinusha got the better of him to end with 3-22 on his debut Test innings.

Fernando also claimed 3-51 while Vishwa Fernando took 2-45.

Opener Shadman Islam was the top-scorer for Bangladesh in the first innings with 46. Mushfiqur Rahim (35), Liton Das (34) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (31) got the start but couldn’t carry the innings, a thing that went against Bangladesh eventually.
