Openers make solid start as Sri Lanka reach 83-0 at lunch

DHAKA, June 26, 2025 (BSS)- The Sri Lankan openers made solid progress to help the side reach 83 for no loss at lunch on Day 2 after Bangladesh were bowled out for 247 in their first innings of the second cricket Test at Sinhalese Sports Club ground in Colombo today.

Pathum Nissanka who struck his career-best 187 in the previous Test, was batting on 42 with Lahiru Udara on 40, keeping Sri Lanka unscathed through lunch.

Nissanka cashed in on Bangladesh pace bowlers' erratic line and length to give the side a dominant start.

Udara, playing his second Test, played sweep shots relentlessly in a bid to make the spinners disarray. He, however, missed a few sweeps, one of which almost cost his wicket as Bangladesh reviewed an umpire decision, only to be turned down by DRS.

Apart from this, both Nissanka and Udara barely offered any chance, much to the despair of the Bangladesh bowlers as Sri Lanka needed just 164 runs to weather the first innings deficit.

Bangladesh survived 49 balls after resuming the Day 2 at 220-8. Taijul Islam scored 33 and was instrumental in helping the side add 27 runs to their overnight total.

Asitha Fernando gave the side breakthrough in just fourth over of the day, dismissing Ebadot Hossain for 8.

Taijul was the last batter out when Sonal Dinusha got the better of him to end with 3-22 on his debut Test innings.

Fernando also claimed 3-51 while Vishwa Fernando took 2-45.

Opener Shadman Islam was the top scorer for Bangladesh in the first innings with 46. Mushfiqur Rahim (35), Liton Das (34) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (31) got the start but couldn't carry the innings, a thing that went against Bangladesh eventually.
