West Indies bowl against England in 1st ODI

BIRMINGHAM, United Kingdom, May 29, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - West Indies captain Shai Hope won the toss and elected to field in the first of a three-match one-day international series against England at Edgbaston on Thursday

It meant England's Jamie Smith was thrust straight into the action in his new role of opening batsman, with the hosts having already named their side for what is Harry Brook's first match since being appointed ODI captain.

Surrey wicketkeeper Smith has impressed with bat and gloves but his promotion to number three at the Champions Trophy in February yielded just 24 runs in three innings in Pakistan.

Jos Buttler stood down as captain after a tournament where England were beaten in all three matches. England are on a seven-match losing streak in ODI cricket and have only won three times in 14 matches since the start of 2024.

The West Indies have won seven of their past 10 ODIs, including a 2-1 series win over England last November and last week drew 1-1 away to Ireland in a three-match contes. Keacy Carty smashing 170 from 142 balls - the joint-sixth highest score in ODIs for the West Indies -- in Dublin on Sunday as his side squared the series with a 197-run win.

But the West Indies failed to qualify for both the 2023 Cricket World Cup and the Champions Trophy.
