DHAKA, Sept 9, 2026 (BSS) – The extension of Motijheel-Kamalapur part of MRT Line-6 is expected to be completed by December 31, officials said. 

“The overall physical progress of the civil works of Motijheel-Kamalapur extension of MRT Line-6 has reached 82.28 percent, while electro-mechanical works progressed by 53 percent,” a spokesperson of the metro rail company told BSS here today.

He said construction of the 1.16-kilometre viaduct and a station under the MRT Line-6 extension from Motijheel to Kamalapur had made significant progress, with construction of the viaduct already completed.

According to the metro project authorities, the completed viaduct has been handed over to Contract Package (CP)-7 for installation of rail tracks.

Meanwhile, structural works of Kamalapur station have also been completed, the project authorities said.

Mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) and architectural works at the station are currently underway, according to project details.

Under CP-7, work on seven sub-systems, including track, electrical systems, signalling, automatic fare collection (AFC), platform screen doors (PSD), telecommunications, lifts and escalators, as well as other electro-mechanical components, is progressing rapidly.

Metro rail services began in December 2022, initially operating between Uttara and Agargaon. In 2023, the then DMTCL managing director MAN Siddique announced plans to eventually add two coaches to each train set.

Currently, each metro train set consists of six coaches. Two trailer coaches, which house the driver's cabin and control systems while also carrying passengers, are positioned at either end, while four motor coaches in the middle are used for carrying passengers.

There are 24 such train sets, although not all of them are currently in operation.

A communications expert said each six-coach train set could carry up to 2,300 passengers when fully loaded.

“If two additional coaches were added to each train set, an extra 1,000 or so passengers could be carried without increasing fuel costs,” he said.

According to DMTCL, more than 400,000 passengers use the metro rail daily. On August 6, 2025, a record 456,746 passengers travelled on the metro rail.
