BHOLA, Aug 20, 2026 (BSS) - The country's first-ever water transport census began today, with data collection set to continue until August 29, focusing particularly on coastal Bhola and adjoining areas.

The government has undertaken the census to determine the accurate number of watercraft and people engaged in water transport-related activities and to establish a reliable national database.

Under the theme, "Let's make the water transport census a success, let's build a prosperous Bangladesh," the census began with a colourful rally at Ilisha River Port in Bhola.

The District Statistics Office organised the rally with support from the district administration. Fishermen, watercraft owners, fish traders and other stakeholders participated in the procession.

Following the rally, Bhola Additional Deputy Commissioner Anindya Mondal inspected different types of watercraft operating along both banks of the Meghna River. Officials from the district administration and the statistics office were present during the inspection.

District Statistics Office Deputy Director Maksudur Rahman said numerous boats, ferries and other watercraft operate daily on the Meghna, while a large number of people depend on waterways for transportation and livelihoods.

However, there is currently no comprehensive and reliable database of the country's watercraft, he said.

Officials said the census would collect updated information on various types of watercraft in designated areas. The information is expected to help reduce waterway accidents, improve safety, facilitate the quick identification of accident victims and support manpower and skills development in the sector.

Local stakeholders welcomed the initiative, saying the census would provide reliable statistics on watercraft and workers and contribute to modernising the country's waterways.

Bangladesh Launch Owners Association President Golam Nabi Alamgir assured full cooperation with the government in implementing the census.

Residents and water transport workers in Bhola also expressed hope that the initiative would bring greater discipline and improve management of the country's river transport system.
