MADARIPUR, July 4, 2026 (BSS) - The district administration has recovered land worth around Tk 620 million for a modern dumping station in Madaripur, resolving a long-standing dispute that had delayed the project.
The recovery operation was carried out on Saturday at Brahmandi in Sadar upazila, where officials conducted measurements, demarcated boundaries and installed red flags to establish government possession of the site.
Officials said the move removed a major obstacle to implementing the long-delayed waste management project.
The dumping station will be developed under the Inclusive Sanitation Improvement Project, which covers 25 municipalities. The Madaripur municipality project is estimated to cost Tk 620 million and will be built on about 5.5 acres of land at Brahmandi.
Construction had been delayed due to a dispute, as part of the land was previously occupied by local individuals. Following a consultation meeting held at the site on Friday, authorities moved to resolve the issue through demarcation and enforcement.
The meeting was attended by Madaripur-2 lawmaker Jahandar Ali Jahan, Local Government Division Deputy Director and Municipal Administrator Jesmin Akter Banu, and local political leaders including BNP district joint convener Mizanur Rahman Murad and Swechchhasebak Dal district president Shahadat Howlader.
After the meeting, officials from the district administration, including surveyors, land officers and the Assistant Commissioner (Land), formally established government possession of the site.
Speaking on the development, MP Jahandar Ali Jahan said the resolution of the dispute had cleared the way for construction of a modern facility that would improve waste management and reduce environmental pollution.
Municipal Administrator Jesmin Akter Banu said the new dumping station would provide a permanent solution to waste collection, storage and disposal, making municipal services more efficient and environmentally friendly.
Local residents welcomed the move, saying dumping waste along highways had long created foul odour and environmental hazards. They expressed hope that the project would significantly improve public health and living conditions.
Officials said about three acres of the earmarked 5.5 acres have so far been recovered and expressed optimism that construction could begin soon.
Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Wadia Shabab, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Laboni Akter and other officials were also present during the operation.
