Teesta crosses DL at Dalia, temporary flooding in low-lying floodplains

By Md Mamun Islam

RANGPUR, June 28, 2026 (BSS) - The Teesta crossed its danger level (DL) at
Dalia point in Nilphamari of greater Rangpur, resulting in temporary flooding
in floodplains and low-lying char areas due to onrushing water amid heavy
rains in the upstream in the last 24 hours.

Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) officials said that the intensity
of monsoon rains has increased in the northeastern states of India, creating
a possibility of temporary flood situation in the low-lying areas of the
greater Rangpur region.

"Following a sharp rise in the water level today, the Teesta was flowing
above its DL by 9cm at 7 pm at Dalia point near the Teesta Barrage Project
(TBP)," Executive Engineer of the BWDB's Teesta Barrage Division Engineer
Amitav Chowdhury told BSS at 7:30 pm.

Earlier, the river was flowing below its DL by 12cm at Dalia point at 3 pm
today.

As the water level continued rising harshly due to heavy onrush of water from
upstream and rose by 21 cm in only four hours, the Teesta was flowing 9cm
above the DL at 7 pm.

However, water level of the Teesta marked a rise by 9cm in the last 12 hours
since 6am and was flowing below its DL by 72 cm at Kawnia point under Kawnia
upazila of Rangpur at 6 pm today.

"Currently, all 44 gates of the TBP are remaining open as a common practice
during the rainy season to control the huge water flow at Dalia point where
water levels of the river were still showing a rising trend," Engineer Amitav
Chowdhury said.

Meanwhile, the floodplains and some very low-lying char areas along the
Teesta in Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat inundated temporarily causing sufferings
to locals amid onrush of water from upstream during the past 24 hours ending
this evening.

"We are closely monitoring the situation and ready to take immediate steps,
if necessary, to save flood control structures on an emergency basis
anywhere," BWDB's Rangpur Circle Superintending Engineer Md Ahsan Habib told
BSS tonight.

The temporary flood situation might fluctuate in the low-lying char areas of
these three districts during the next couple of days.

Meanwhile, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) of BWDB in a
bulletin today said water levels of the Teesta, Dudhkumar and Dharla rivers
in northern Rangpur division have remained stable during the last 24
hours, which may increase during the next 72 hours.

Within the next 48 hours, these rivers may exceed their respective DLs, and
short-duration flooding may occur in the adjacent low-lying areas of
Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Rangpur and Gaibandha districts.

During the last 24 hours, water levels of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna river system
have increased and this trend may continue over the next five days.

During the next third to fifth day (July 1 to July 3), the Brahmaputra-Jamuna
rivers may flow at warning levels in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogura,
Sirajganj and Tangail districts, and adjacent low-lying areas may be
inundated at some places.

According to meteorological agencies, heavy to very heavy rainfall is
forecast during the next four days over Rangpur, Sylhet and Mymensingh
divisions and the adjoining upstream regions of West Bengal, Assam, Arunachal
Pradesh and Meghalaya States of India, followed by moderate-heavy to heavy
rainfall during the subsequent one day.

The recorded rainfalls in the upstream Indian states during the last 24 hours
till 9am today were 390mm at Mawkyrwat, 264mm at Mawsynram, 162mm at
Siliguri, 152mm at Pasighat, 142mm at RKM Sohra, 75mm at Khliehriat, 69mm at
Coochbehar and 66 mm at Cherrapunji points.

"During the same period, 23mm rainfall was recorded at Pateswari in Kurigram,
15mm at Dalia in Nilphamari and 6mm at Panchagarh points," the FFWC bulletin
said.

The Dudhkumar was flowing below the DL by 70cm at Pateshwari, Dharla by 127cm
below its DL at Kurigram and Brahmaputra was flowing below its DL by 132cm at
Noonkhawa, 110cm at Hatia and 99cm at Chilmari points respectively at 9 am
