Breaking stagnation, RUET development project gains fresh momentum

RAJSHAHI, June 11, 2026 (BSS) - The ongoing "Further Development of RUET Project" at Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology has gained renewed momentum after overcoming years of delays, administrative complications and alleged irregularities, with several key infrastructure projects now nearing completion.

According to the university's Planning and Development Office, the project was launched in March 2019 with an initial allocation of Tk 599 crore. As the amount proved insufficient to complete the planned works, the Development Project Proposal (DPP) was later revised, raising the budget to Tk 629 crore and extending the implementation period by one and a half years.

Director of the Planning and Development Office Professor Dr. H. M. Russell said project implementation had long been hindered by administrative bottlenecks, lack of coordination and various complications, resulting in significant delays.

Following the student-led mass uprising of August 2024 and the subsequent political transition, work on several development projects at RUET came to a temporary halt. However, initiatives taken by the current university administration helped resume the activities, leading to visible progress in a number of major infrastructures.

Work on the Civil Engineering Faculty Building, which had reached only the fourth floor by August 2024, has now advanced to the 10th floor, with more than 60 percent of the interior finishing work completed by March 2026.

Similar progress has been recorded in the Electronic and Computer Engineering Faculty Building and the new Administrative Building.

Construction of both structures had remained suspended for a period despite reaching the fourth and fifth floors respectively by August 2024. As of March this year, construction up to the 10th floor has been completed, while interior finishing work has reached around 65 percent.

The Mechanical Engineering Faculty Building has also seen significant advancement. Construction, which was limited to the fifth floor in August 2024, has now reached the 10th floor, with more than 60 percent of the interior work completed.

Substantial progress has also been made in the 10-storey Institute Building and the Teachers' Dormitory. By August 2024, work had progressed to the fifth and seventh floors respectively. The Institute Building has now been completed up to the 10th floor, while nearly 70 percent of its interior finishing work has been completed.

The Teachers' Dormitory, meanwhile, was fully completed and formally handed over in March this year. The university has already invited applications from teachers for accommodation in the building.

Female Hall-1 and Female Hall-2 were completed and handed over in March, nearly nine months ahead of schedule. Although the two residential halls had reached the seventh floor by August 2024, the remaining work was completed well before the original December 2026 deadline.

Construction of Male Hall-1 and Male Hall-2 has also been completed. However, the formal handover process is yet to be finalised.

University authorities said the halls would soon be made ready for students. Sources concerned said installation of lifts had been delayed due to contractor-related issues, but the equipment has now arrived at the sites and installation work is underway.

In addition, the Staff and Officers' Quarters, which had been progressing slowly since work began in November 2019, were brought into a usable condition by March this year.

Officials involved in the project said the recent progress reflects stronger project management, close monitoring and improved coordination among stakeholders.

Professor Russell said the current administration had been able to revive the development projects by overcoming prolonged stagnation and various administrative challenges.

"Despite limitations in time and resources, we have achieved visible progress through planned management and coordinated efforts," he said.

He expressed optimism that the remaining works would be completed within the stipulated timeframe and all infrastructures would be handed over before the project deadline on December 31, 2026.

Stakeholders believe completion of the projects will significantly improve the academic and residential environment at RUET and provide modern facilities for students, teachers and staff.
