KHULNA, June 11, 2026 (BSS) - The Khulna Divisional Museum has emerged as a major centre for preserving and promoting the rich archaeological heritage, culture and history of southern Bangladesh, drawing visitors from different walks of life every day.

Situated near the busy Shibbari intersection in the heart of Khulna city, the museum is housed in a distinctive octagonal building featuring six galleries that offer visitors a comprehensive glimpse into the region's historical evolution.

Established by the Department of Archaeology and inaugurated on September 12, 1998, the museum serves as an important institution for education, research and cultural awareness through its extensive collection of archaeological artefacts spanning different historical periods.

During a recent visit, this correspondent found students, researchers and other visitors exploring the galleries and learning about the archaeological treasures of the country.

Sonia Rahman, a student of the Bangla Discipline at Khulna University, said the museum had deepened her understanding of the history and heritage of southern Bangladesh.

"I had heard about Bharat Bhayana Buddhist Temple and other historical sites from my mother, who is a schoolteacher. Visiting the museum allowed me to learn more about the temple and many historic mosques, including those associated with Khan Jahan Ali," she told BSS.

Fatema-Tuz-Zohra, a student of the Mass Communication and Journalism Department at Northern University of Business and Technology Khulna, said every exhibit narrates a unique story.

"Through these artefacts, we are not only reading history in books but also experiencing and understanding it directly," she said.

Museum officials said one of the institution's primary objectives is to preserve historical artefacts while helping younger generations develop a stronger connection with their cultural roots and identity.

Talking to BSS, Regional Director of Khulna Divisional Museum Md Mahidul Islam said the museum was established on one acre of land and regularly welcomes both local and foreign visitors.

He said the museum houses a diverse collection of archaeological artefacts from the Gupta, Pala, Sena, Mughal and British periods, including terracotta objects, stone sculptures, replicas of ancient coins, household utensils and a dedicated Sundarbans Gallery.
