No longer waiting for government jobs, they are establishing themselves as the successful business owners, creating employment opportunities and contributing to the local economy.
Currently, around 45 to 50 women entrepreneurs in the district are engaged in various businesses, ranging from clothing and jewelry to traditional hill-region attire. Many have already achieved notable success. The entrepreneurs believe that with government support, including low-interest loans and training, they could significantly expand their ventures and further strengthen the local economy.
Tajeswari Chakma of Fashion Maat, Bobby Chakma of Fashion Coat and Hira Chakma of Hira Fashion highlighted that many educated women are choosing business over conventional employment. These women are also mentoring new entrepreneurs, fostering a community that encourages collaboration between seasoned and emerging business owners.
Despite their achievements, several women entrepreneurs feel that they still face challenges in scaling up. Limited access to training programs and difficulties in connecting with external markets are significant hurdles. They asserted that the government assistance and simplified loan schemes could play a crucial role in helping them to expand their businesses and contribute to the economy.

Various training programs, including bag-making workshops, are being offered to empower the women. “Entrepreneurs who need financial support to grow their businesses can also access government loans. This year, five women entrepreneurs are set to be recognized with awards in different categories for their achievements,” she added.
