MEHERPUR, May 3, 2026 (BSS) - Litchi orchards across the district are entering peak season, raising hopes of a vibrant market and significant earnings for local farmers.
Known for its juicy texture and rich flavor, Meherpur's litchi has already begun arriving in markets, with full-scale trading expected within the next week.
Farmers and traders anticipate that, if favorable prices prevail, litchi sales in the district could reach up to Taka 55 crore this season. The fruit's strong reputation has fueled demand nationwide, particularly in major urban centers including Dhaka.
According to the district Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), litchi cultivation covered 715 hectares last year, producing 6,110 metric tons valued at over Taka 50 crore. This year, acreage has expanded to around 800 hectares, signaling an increase in production.
Meherpur's litchi enjoys a distinct market position due to its taste and quality. After meeting local demand, the fruit is distributed to various districts across the country.
The local 'Muzaffar' variety remains dominant, although the 'Bombay' variety and high-yielding hybrid types are gaining popularity among farmers.
Abdul Malek, a farmer from Sadar upazila, expressed optimism about the current season, citing good yields. However, he said that profitability will depend heavily on stable market prices and efficient transportation.
"If the weather remains favorable and prices are fair, we expect good returns. But poor transport and market systems could lead to losses," he said.
Another farmer, Rahim Uddin, pointed out that while litchi cultivation has become increasingly profitable in recent years, rising costs of pesticides and labor have added pressure on growers.
Traders also see strong potential. Saiful Islam, a local litchi trader, said demand remains high in major cities, with wholesalers often purchasing directly from orchards. He emphasized that improved road transport and storage facilities could further boost the business.
DAE Deputy Director Agronomist Sanjeev Mridha said ongoing guidance is being provided to farmers to manage pests and diseases and maintain fruit quality. "With better market management, farmers can secure fair prices," he added.
Experts view litchi as an emerging cash crop for Meherpur. They believe that with improved planning, modern cultivation techniques, and stronger marketing systems, the sector holds significant potential for further growth in the coming years.
