BCG seizes 8,000 kg urea fertilizer in Bhola

BHOLA, Sept 6, 2026 (BSS) - The Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) has seized 8,000 kilograms (160 sacks) of urea fertilizer from the Meghna River in Tajumuddin upazila of Bhola during an anti-smuggling drive.

The fertilizer was allegedly being transported to Myanmar for smuggling, said BCG media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Suzon this evening.

A steel-hulled trawler used for carrying the fertilizer was also seized, he said.

Acting on a tip-off, a team from Coast Guard Station Tajumuddin conducted a special operation near Muktijoddha Bazar on the Meghna River at around 3pm on Saturday and intercepted a suspicious trawler.

Searching the vessel, the team recovered the fertilizer, estimated to be worth around Tk 2.4 lakh.

Sensing the presence of the Coast Guard, the smugglers fled the scene. No one was arrested.

Legal proceedings are underway over the seized fertilizer and trawler.

The Coast Guard will continue its anti-smuggling operations in the national interest, the officer added.
