RANGPUR, Sept 1, 2006 (BSS) – Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime and Ops) of Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RpMP) Tofail Ahmed today said police are on the verge of unraveling the mystery of the quadruple murder case in Rangpur.
 
“As part of the investigation, a three-member DB police team led by the Investigation Officer (IO) of the case and Officer-in-Charge (OC) Inspector Md Zinnat Ali interrogated arrested accused Siddhartha Das and Mugdha Das at the jail gate today,” he said at a press briefing here today. 
 
Arrested accused in the quadruple murder case Siddhartha Das and Mugdha Das were interrogated at Rangpur Central Jail gate as per the court order. 
 
The three-member DB police team from the RpMP went to Rangpur Central Jail around 12 noon on Tuesday. 
 
In addition to the IO of the case Inspector Md Zinnat Ali, the other two members of the team are DB Sub-inspectors Md Mominul Islam and Abu Sayeed Babla. 
 
At the press briefing held at the conference room of the RpMP Commissioner's office on Tuesday afternoon, Additional Commissioner of Police Tofail Ahmed said that the RpMP is working on the four murders of the teacher’s family in Rangpur city. 
 
“We are on the verge of unraveling the mystery of this murder. Since this is an under investigation, there is no point in hiding any information here,” he added.  
 
He said, “We have interrogated the two accused at the jail gate and this process will continue. We will resolve this case with the utmost professionalism in unraveling the mystery of this murder, InshaAllah.”
 
Earlier, on Monday, the police said that the presence of drugs was not found in their bodies in the dope test of accused Siddhartha Das and Mugdha Das. 
 
However, the expert doctor concerned said that the dope test was conducted late. 
 
On the same day, the police applied for a three-day remand for questioning the two accused. 
 
However, Rangpur Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court Judge Md Rafiqul Islam ordered the interrogation at the jail gate for two days and three hours each day within three days. 
 
On Monday, RpMP Deputy Commissioner of Police (DB) Sanatan Chakraborty said that several new pieces of information have been found even after giving confessional statements under Section 164 by the two arrested accused. 
 
After examining them and appointing a new investigation officer, a three-day remand application was filed on Monday for further investigation. 
 
He also said that the accused were not produced in court for the hearing of the remand application. 
 
Legal Aid lawyers were involved in the hearing on their behalf through video conference. 
 
After the hearing, the court ordered their interrogation at the jail gate for two days and three hours each day within three days. 
 
Meanwhile, Sanatan Chakraborty said that the police have received new information about the murder of four members of the teacher's family on Monday. 
 
He said that the two arrested accused had spoken on mobile phones many times before and after the incident. 
 
"They spoke 80 times in 80 hours. That means once every hour before and after the incident; which is unusual and therefore these killings could be premeditated," he suspected.
 
Earlier, on the night of August 22, 2026, police recovered the bodies of Ganapati Chakraborty, a retired teacher of Rangpur Zilla School, his wife, daughter and son of the same family from their locked house in the Machuapara area of Rangpur city. 
 
Neighbors Mugdha Das and Siddhartha Das were arrested from the same area in this incident.
 
Gopinath Chakraborty, the elder brother of the deceased Ganapati Chakraborty, filed a murder case with the Kotwali Police Station in this incident. 
 
The two accused have confessed to four murders in court.
