DHAKA, August 25, 2026 (BSS) - The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against former mayor of Bera of Pabna SM Asif Shams for failing to submit his wealth statement within stipulated timeframe, a graft commission spokesman said here today.

“The case was filed under section 26(2) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004,” ACC deputy director for public relations Md Aktarul Islam told a news briefing.

Shams is the son of former deputy speaker Advocate Shahsul Haque Tuku while the case was filed against him since he failed to comply with the graft commission demand to submit his wealth statement as part of investigations against the father, now jail.

According to the ACC Tuku allegedly used political influence to acquire substantial quantum assets.

An order was issued requiring Asif Shams to submit a wealth statement in the prescribed form served at his permanent address on January 16, 2026, in the presence of two witnesses giving him a 21-day deadline.

The ACC spokesman said Shams did not submit the statement within the timeframe that expired on February 18 and also did not seek an extended deadline.

ACC earlier on December 23, 2025 filed a case Tuku, also a former state minister for home, over allegations of acquiring assets beyond his known sources of income, which is currently under investigation.

The graft commission, meanwhile, issued an order asking Tuku’s other son SM Nasif Shams, and his wife Mumtahina Mostafa to submit their wealth statements over allegations of acquiring illegal assets. Their cases are currently under inquiry.
