Call for safer, chemical-free practices in fish production

KHULNA, Aug 17, 2026 (BSS) — Speakers at a meeting here today underscored the need to refrain from using harmful poisons and chemicals in fish production, as the fisheries sector plays an important role in the national economy.

They said the government is planning to introduce a fisheries card for fishermen, similar to the farmers’ card, to provide them with various facilities.

They made the remarks at a discussion with stakeholders on the conservation of fishery resources and sustainable production, held in the city as part of the National Fisheries Week.

The Khulna District Fisheries Office organised the discussion at the conference room of the Gallamari Fish Seed Production Farm this afternoon.

This year’s theme of the National Fisheries Week is “A self-reliant country through silver fish, Bangladesh first.”
District Fisheries Officer Md Badruzzaman presided over the meeting.

Quality Assurance Manager of the Quality Control Laboratory of the Khulna Fisheries Department Md Muqtadir Khan attended the event as the chief guest.

Deputy Director of the Fisheries Department Bipul Kumar Basak, Senior Assistant Director H.M. Badruzzaman and Senior Assistant Director A.T.M. Tawfiq Mahmud were present as special guests.

Assistant Director Ujjal Kumar Roy presented a paper on the conservation of fishery resources and sustainable production.

Fish farmers, fishermen, fish catchers, boat owners, boat operators and other stakeholders involved in the fisheries sector participated in the discussion.
