BARISHAL, Aug 6, 2026(BSS)-Prime Minister's Special Assistant on Health Affairs Dr. Zia Uddin Haider today said that the government is working to ensure that the patients of Barishal no longer need to travel to Dhaka for treatment due to a lack of quality medical services. 

He said that the goal is to provide quality healthcare at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College (SBMC) Hospital so that the patients can receive the necessary treatment locally.

He made the remarks while talking to the journalists after a meeting with the hospital's governing board and departmental heads at the SBMC Hospital here.

Dr. Haider also announced that a burn unit will be established in every district town to treat the burn patients immediately and specially closer to home.

Earlier, a view-exchange meeting was held at 9:30 am in the hospital's conference room.
Addressing the meeting as the chief guest, Dr. Haider emphasized improving the quality of healthcare services, ensuring a patient-friendly environment and strengthening coordinated efforts in the health sector.

Among others, Principal of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Prof. Dr. Anwar Hossain Babul, Director of SBMC Hospital Brigadier General Dr AKM Mashiul Munir, Deputy Commissioner of Barishal Mamun Khandaker, Director of the Health of Barishal Division Dr. Rafiqul Haider, President of DAB Barishal unit Dr. Nazrul Islam Selim, Head of the Surgery Department at Bangladesh Shishu Hospital Prof. Dr. Khalid Mahmud Shakil, President of the Barishal Citizens' Forum Dr. Mizanur Rahman, Joint Convener of Barishal City BNP Afroza Khanam Nasrin and heads of various departments of the hospital, were present at that time.

The meeting discussed the hospital's overall operations, measures to improve the quality of healthcare services, infrastructure development, addressing the shortage of healthcare personnel and ensuring better medical services for the patients. Participants highlighted existing challenges and opportunities at the hospital and gave recommendations aimed at improving healthcare services.
