SYLHET, Aug 6, 2026 (BSS) - State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development (LGRD) and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam today said that the government aims to complete elections for all five tiers of local government within the current fiscal year.

"The government is committed to holding elections for all five tiers of local government within this fiscal year,” he said. 

He made the remarks while speaking to reporters after visiting the Secondary Transfer Station (STS) of Sylhet City Corporation's (SCC) waste management facility at Parairchak in South Surma. 
 
“The sequence of the elections would be determined after August through consultations involving the Local Government Division, the Finance Division, and the Election Commission,” he said.

Commenting on national politics, Alam said there is no opportunity for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to return directly to the country without facing legal proceedings. 

He added that any action against her would be carried out in accordance with court rulings and the country's legal process.

During the visit, the state minister praised Sylhet City Corporation's waste management system, describing it as one of the best among city corporations in Bangladesh. 

He highlighted SCC's achievements in waste management, dengue prevention, cleanliness drives, and canal restoration, saying the city is noticeably cleaner than many other urban areas.

The minister also inspected the progress of the country's first bio-drying plant and exchanged views with officials on the project's implementation.
