Tk 3.77cr toll collected at Jamuna bridge in 24-hour

TANGAIL, May 26, 2026 (BSS) - A last-minute rush of Eid holidaymakers as well as cattle-laden vehicles has fueled a several-fold increase in traffic on the Dhaka–Tangail highway and the Jamuna Bridge.

A total of 53,246 vehicles crossed the Jamuna Bridge in the last 24 hours till 12am Monday, generating toll revenue of Tk 3,77,58,200.

Of these, 32,186 vehicles were heading toward northern Bangladesh, generating Tk 1,96,40,700 in tolls. On the other hand, 21,060 vehicles traveled toward Dhaka, generating Tk 1,81,175 00 in tolls.

Executive Engineer Syed Riaz Uddin of the Jamuna Bridge site office confirmed it.

Meanwhile, district police have deployed 1,000 officers at various points along the highway to ease traffic congestion. 

Special police surveillance has also been placed on the bridge to ensure a comfortable Eid journey for homebound travelers. 

In addition, police patrols have been increased at important locations on the highway to prevent theft, robbery, and snatching.

Executive Engineer Syed Riaz Uddin told BSS that during the Eid travel period, vehicles are crossing the bridge through a total of 18 booths — 9 on each side of the bridge. 

Two separate booths on each side have been designated for motorcycles. He added that efforts are being made to keep toll collection operating around the clock.

Tangail District Police Superintendent Muhammad Shamsul Alam Sarkar told BSS that 1,000 police personnel are working at different points on the highway to reduce traffic congestion and ensure a comfortable Eid journey for travelers heading home.

He further said that police patrols have been strengthened at key points on the highway to prevent theft, robbery, and snatching. 

Mobile magistrates are also operating on the highway to stop the movement of unfit vehicles, regulate trucks carrying sacrificial animals and goods, and prevent overcharging of passengers, he said.
