DMP issues Eid travel guidelines for safer journeys

DHAKA, May 24, 2026 (BSS) - As part of extensive preparations for the upcoming holy Eid-ul-Azha, the Traffic Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has issued a comprehensive set of instructions for public transport owners, workers, passengers and pedestrians to ensure a safe, smooth and uninterrupted Eid journey.

In a public notice issued for residents of the capital, the DMP said a large number of people are expected to leave Dhaka for their hometowns during the Eid holidays, prompting special traffic management measures across bus terminals and major roads.

The DMP urged transport owners and workers to strictly follow traffic rules and passenger safety measures.

Bus operators have been instructed to maintain scheduled departures, avoid overcharging passengers, prevent harassment, and ensure that the same seat is not sold to multiple passengers.

The police also directed transport workers not to carry passengers on bus rooftops or in goods and livestock vehicles, especially on return trips carrying sacrificial animals.

Drivers were instructed to maintain speed limits, avoid reckless driving and illegal overtaking, and refrain from driving while intoxicated, ill or drowsy.

According to the guidelines, vehicles without valid documents or drivers without valid driving licences will not be allowed to operate.

Drivers have also been prohibited from using mobile phones or earphones while driving, and loud music inside vehicles has been discouraged.

The DMP further instructed transport owners to verify the validity of drivers' licences before hiring and not to force drivers to operate vehicles for more than five consecutive hours or eight hours a day.

Passengers were advised to board buses only from designated terminals and counters, avoid accepting food or drinks from strangers, keep personal belongings under own supervision, and reach terminals before departure time.

The police also requested pedestrians to use zebra crossings, foot overbridges and underpasses while crossing roads and to avoid using mobile phones while walking or crossing streets.

In case of emergencies, passengers and commuters have been asked to contact terminal police control rooms or the national emergency service hotline 999.

The DMP has sought cooperation from all city residents to make this year's Eid journey safe, orderly and hassle-free.
