DHAKA, May 24, 2026 (BSS) - The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has issued a set of traffic management directives to ensure smooth vehicle movement around cattle markets and major roads ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, when millions are expected to leave and enter the capital.
According to a DMP notice, no sacrificial animal trading, loading or unloading will be allowed outside designated cattle market boundaries.
Separate spaces inside or near the markets must be arranged for unloading and loading livestock-carrying vehicles to avoid road congestion.
Authorities also directed that trucks transporting sacrificial animals must display banners mentioning the destination cattle market.
Leasing cattle markets beside highways or major roads has been discouraged, while markets set up along feeder or narrow roads must construct at least six-foot-high barriers separating the market from roads and maintain separate entry and exit points.
The DMP further instructed market lessees to deploy sufficient volunteers and workers to assist police in traffic management.
Parking of buyers' vehicles or livestock-carrying pickups on roads adjacent to cattle markets has been strictly prohibited, with a warning that illegally parked vehicles will be impounded and legal action taken.
The police also said mobile courts would take action if cattle markets fail to maintain proper management and urged city residents to slaughter sacrificial animals at designated places instead of on roads.
To ease Eid travel congestion, DMP requested commuters to avoid several major routes, including Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway, Dhaka-Chattogram Highway and Mirpur Road during peak travel days from May 25 to 27.
