Mokamtola, Chandraganj upazilas formed as Shibganj, Lakshmipur Sadar split

DHAKA, May 20, 2026 (BSS) - The government has issued separate gazettes bifurcating Shibganj upazila of Bogura to form a new upazila named 'Mokamtola' and Lakshmipur Sadar upazila to create 'Chandraganj' upazila, aiming to improve administrative efficiency and public service delivery.

Separate notifications, signed by Additional Secretary (Coordination) of Cabinet Division Md Khaled Hasan, were issued yesterday.

Officials concerned said the decision was taken in line with long-standing public demand, population growth and expansion of administrative activities to ensure faster services at the local level.

The gazette includes directives on administrative boundaries, jurisdiction of unions and operational arrangements of the new upazilas.

Under the decision, the densely populated Shibganj upazila has been divided to create 'Mokamtola' upazila, while Lakshmipur Sadar has been split to form 'Chandraganj' upazila.

Residents of both areas had long demanded upazila status, citing difficulties in accessing education, healthcare and administrative services due to distance from upazila headquarters.

Locals expect the new upazilas to bring services closer to people and boost local development activities.

The gazette also said administrative structures will be developed in phases, including offices of Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), police station, land office and health complex.
