DHAKA, May 19, 2026 (BSS) - World Metrology Day will be observed tomorrow across the country and elsewhere in the world with the aim of raising awareness about the vital role of accurate measurement in modern society and policymaking.
The day is observed annually on May 20 to highlight the importance of metrology in ensuring fairness, safety, quality and reliability in trade, industry, healthcare, environmental protection and consumer services.
This year's global theme, "Metrology: Building Trust in Policy Making," emphasises how precise and dependable measurements contribute to effective governance, fair trade practices, industrial development, public health protection, environmental sustainability and consumer rights.
On the occasion, special messages have been issued by the heads of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures and the International Bureau of Legal Metrology, stressing the growing significance of metrology in strengthening confidence in national and international decision-making systems.
Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI), the country's apex national standards body, plays a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy of weights and measures, implementing the metric system, promoting the International System of Units (SI) and enforcing legal metrology regulations across the country.
BSTI's National Metrology Laboratory also provides internationally traceable calibration services and preserves national measurement standards to support the country's expanding industrial and trade sectors.
The organisation said a strong National Quality Infrastructure (NQI), built on standardisation, metrology, testing and accreditation, is essential for improving competitiveness, ensuring product quality and accelerating sustainable economic growth.
To mark the day, BSTI has undertaken a series of nationwide programmes, including seminars, awareness campaigns and promotional activities through its headquarters, regional and district offices.
Special interviews and discussion programmes will be broadcast on Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar.
Mobile SMS campaigns and visual displays, including banners, festoons and placards, will also be showcased at important locations and intersections across the country.
