DHAKA, May 17, 2026 (BSS) - State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M. Rashiduzzaman Millat today said the tourism sector is set to become one of the major drivers of employment generation and economic growth in Bangladesh.

He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the "TOAB International Tourism Award (TITA)-2026" ceremony, organised by the Tour Operators Association of Bangladesh (TOAB) at a hotel in capital's Banani area this evening.

The state minister said the government considers tourism not only an important economic sector but also a key instrument for job creation, regional development and cultural exchange.

He said an integrated tourism master plan has been adopted to develop and promote 1,498 tourist destinations across the country, covering eco-tourism, adventure tourism, religious tourism, and cultural and heritage-based tourism.

Millat said TOAB has been asked to submit specific proposals for necessary policy reforms to further strengthen the sector.

He added that although tourism currently contributes around 3 percent to the GDP, the government aims to increase this share to 8-9 percent in the near future.

He also expressed optimism about expanding tourism infrastructure through public-private partnership (PPP) initiatives.

At the event, 13 organisations were honoured in 13 categories for their contributions to the tourism sector under the TITA-2026 awards.
