DHAKA, May 13, 2026 (BSS) - Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has set a target to remove sacrificial animal waste within eight hours in the city corporation area on the day of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.

"Special rewards will also be arranged for cleanliness workers in recognition of responsible and outstanding performance," DSCC administrator Md Abdus Salam told a views-exchange meeting with workers and local residents after visiting the sanitation workers' housing facility in Dayaganj in the capital.

Emphasizing the importance of public awareness in keeping the city clean, Salam said, "It is not possible to keep the city clean by relying only on sanitation workers."

The administrator urged the citizens not to throw waste into drains and canals as this practice eventually blocks drainage system and causes waterlogging.

He said plans have been taken to construct 18 multi-storey residential buildings with modern facilities in different parts of the capital to improve the living standards of sanitation workers and ensure safe housing for them.

He added that the risky and dilapidated buildings currently in use would gradually be demolished and replaced with the new housing facilities.

The administrator said many of the buildings where sanitation workers currently live are in extremely dangerous condition.

Before the construction of new buildings begins, arrangements will be made to relocate residents to safe places so that residents do not suffer inconvenience.

He informed that proposals for constructing 18 multi-storey buildings in various sanitation workers' colonies-including Mironjilla, Dhalpur, Ganaktuli, Dayaganj, Wari, and Postogola-have already been sent to the relevant ministry for approval. Once approval is granted, implementation work will begin quickly.

He further said that equal civic facilities for all residents, regardless of religion or ethnicity, would be ensured in the new housing projects.

Playgrounds for children, places of worship, and other essential civic amenities would also be included in the housing areas, he said.

The DSCC administrator also highlighted special initiatives to solve various problems faced by sanitation workers. He said workers would be allowed to pay overdue electricity bills in installments, and DSCC would assist in paying gas bills.

During the visit, Dhaka-7 lawmaker Hamidur Rahman Hamid, local public representatives, and senior DSCC officials were present.
