CHITTAGONG, April 30, 2026 (BSS)- Some popular fish species Rui, Katla, Mrigel, and Kaliboush, released sample eggs in the river Halda, the only natural fish breeding ground of the country.
Gravid fishes released fries Thursday which was seasons first egg release of carp fishes, usually happened during the March-June period of the monsoon.
After a prolong wait, a sufficient number of sample eggs were released into the river. Fisheries experts and fry-collectors said the mother fishes released an ample amount of eggs.
Fisherman Kamal Uddin Swdagor, who collects fish eggs in the Halda River, told BSS that the mother fish have released sample eggs, and they are now waiting for the full release of eggs. He has already collected sample eggs.
On Thursday, the fry collectors gathered a satisfactory amount of sample eggs as the mother fishes released a large quantity of eggs. Kamal Uddin Swdagor mentioned that 400 fishermen with 100 boats collected the eggs on the first day of the season.
Manjurul Kibria, a Halda researcher and teacher at Chattogram University's Zoology Department said the river environment is now conducive for spawning. Mother fish have released eggs in various locations, and the turbidity of the river water currently ranges from 100 to 150. Once it reaches 600 to 700, the mother fish will release eggs in full swing.
