SYLHET, April 6, 2026 (BSS) - Due to the outbreak of measles in Sylhet, a 10-
bed isolation unit has been opened at MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital
here.
Earlier, the Health Department had declared Ward No. 4 of Sylhet Shaheed
Shamsuddin Ahmed Hospital as an isolation unit and was providing treatment
since March 26.
Currently, 62 children and adolescents are admitted there with measles
symptoms.
Brigadier General Umar Rashed Munir, director of the hospital, said that a
new 10-bed isolation center has been opened due to the recent increase in
measles infection among the children.
This special initiative has been taken so that the affected patients can be
kept separate and given proper treatment, he added.
He said the introduction of the isolation unit will help control the
infection and ensure the safety of other patients. In addition, doctors and
nurses have been given special responsibility for intensive monitoring of
patients and providing necessary treatment, he added.
Meanwhile, a four-month old baby died at Osmani Medical College Hospital on
Monday afternoon with symptoms of measles.
The child named Farhan died from bronchopneumonia and a lung infection,
complicated by cardiac arrest also, said hospital's Deputy Director Dr
Mahbubur Rahman.
He said the child died at around 1 pm with symptoms of measles. Once the lab
test report is received, it will be confirmed whether it is measles or not,
he added.
Meanwhile, the health department report said that a total of 101 people are
currently undergoing treatment in various hospitals in Sylhet division with
symptoms of measles and rubella.
