Indian national arrested with diamonds worth Tk 6.62 crore in Jashore

DHAKA, April 2, 2026 (BSS) - Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have arrested an Indian national along with diamonds and foreign currencies worth over Taka 6.62 crore during a special drive in Jashore.

According to a BGB press release, a patrol team from Jashore Battalion (49 BGB) conducted the operation in Notunhat area on the Jashore-Jhikargacha highway based on confidential information. 

During the operation, they detained Sujauddin (52) and recovered 155.76 grams of diamonds, estimated to be worth Taka 6,61,39,590.

During preliminary interrogation, the detainee, a resident of Tamil Nadu, India, said he had collected the diamonds from smugglers in Dhaka and was transporting them to Benapole border to hand them over to an unidentified person in Kolkata.

In addition to the diamonds, BGB seized Taka 5,530 in Bangladeshi currency, INR 5,880, USD 550, 200 Thai Baht, a mobile phone, and a digital watch from his possession. 

The total seizure value stands at Taka 6,62,65,161.

The recovered diamonds were initially verified as genuine by a representative of a local jewelry shop in the presence of law enforcement officials.

Legal proceedings are underway against the arrested individual, and he was handed over to Jashore Kotwali Model Police Station. 

The seized diamonds and foreign currencies were deposited in the government treasury.

Lieutenant Colonel Golam Mohammad Saiful Alam Khan, Commanding Officer of Jashore Battalion, said that BGB remains committed to preventing all forms of smuggling, including drugs, gold, and diamonds, under its declared "zero tolerance" policy.
