KHULNA, March 12, 2026 (BSS) - At least 14 people, including a bride and groom and several members of the same family, were killed in a head-on collision between a Bangladesh Navy bus and a passenger microbus on the Mongla-Khulna highway this afternoon.
The accident occurred around 4:00 pm near Belai Bridge when the microbus, carrying members of a family returning from a wedding ceremony, collided with a Navy bus coming from the opposite direction.
Police and hospital sources said seven people died on the spot, while others later succumbed to their injuries at different hospitals.
The deceased include Abdur Razzak, president of Ward No. 8 BNP in Mongla upazila; his son and groom Sabbir; the bride Marzia Akter Mitu; Mitu's grandmother Anowara Begum; Razzak's wife Anjumara Begum; his daughters Lamia and Aishi; Aishi's husband Samiul; daughter-in-law Putul; Putul's son Alif; Iran; microbus driver Naim; Ibrahim Sani; and another unidentified person.
Officer-in-Charge of Katakhali Highway Police Station Md Zafar Ahmed said the microbus travelling from Koyra to Mongla collided with the Navy bus, leaving the vehicle badly mangled.
Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) emergency physician Dr Mehnaz Mosharraf said several injured victims from the same family, including women and children, were brought to the hospital.
Rupsha Upazila Health Complex physician Dr Rajesh said four bodies were kept at the hospital.
Family members said Abdur Razzak was returning home with relatives after arranging the marriage of his younger son Sabbir with Marzia Akter Mitu of Naksha village in Koyra upazila.
The accident has cast a pall of gloom over the area.
