DHAKA, Jan 21, 2026 (BSS) - Abul Kalam Azad, who was convicted and sentenced to death by the then International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 in 2013 for crimes against humanity committed in Faridpur during the 1971 War of Liberation, surrendered before the tribunal today.
Confirming the development to reporters, prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim said the prosecution has received a petition submitted by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, seeking to surrender.
Azad was convicted in the maiden judgment delivered by the then ICT for trying heinous crimes against humanity committed during the War of Liberation. He was tried in absentia and found guilty of seven charges of crimes against humanity.
Azad went into hiding a few hours before the then ICT-2 issued an arrest warrant against him on April 3, 2012.
