ICT issues arrest warrants against Nanak, Taposh, 22 others over July crimes against humanity

DHAKA, Jan 18, 2026 (BSS) – The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 today issued arrest warrants against 24 individuals, including former minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak and former Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, in a case filed over alleged crimes against humanity committed in Mohammadpur during the July Mass Uprising.

The three-member tribunal, headed by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder, passed the order taking cognizance of the formal charge filed against 28 accused in the case, and set January 29 for producing them before the tribunal.

The court also sent four leaders of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) — Naimul Hasan Russel, Sajjad Hossain, Omar Faruk, and Fazle Rabbi — to jail, after showing them arrested in the case.

After the order, Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam told journalists that, at the instigation and provocation of the accused, and with their direct and indirect presence, gunfire was opened on innocent students and members of the public during the July Mass Uprising.

“As a result, nine people, including Mahmudur Rahman Saikat and Farhan Faiyaz, were martyred in the Mohammadpur area, while many others were injured. The prosecution has sufficient evidence, including video footage, in this regard,” he added.

He further said that there are 50 witnesses in the case.

Earlier today, the prosecution filed the formal charge against 28 individuals, including Nanak, Taposh, former Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Habibur Rahman, and former additional DIGs Biplob Kumar Sarker and Proloy Kumar Joarder.

The charges involve allegations of killings, repression, and other serious abuses reportedly carried out in Mohammadpur during the uprising. Prosecutors said they have specific evidence linking the accused to acts amounting to crimes against humanity, which the tribunal will now examine during judicial proceedings.
