CHATTOGRAM, Jan 12, 2026 (BSS) – A special court here today awarded life-term imprisonment to 10 members of a snatchers’ gang for killing a constable about a decade ago.
The court of Chattogram Divisional Special Judge Mizanur Rahman delivered the verdict, sentencing the 10 accused to life imprisonment for killing cop Abdul Kaiyum, 22, in the city’s Ambagan area on November 3, 2013.
Among the accused, five were present in the court during the judgment, while the remaining five are still absconding.
The court also imposed a fine of Tk 25,000 on each of the accused and ordered the money to be handed over to the victim’s family.
The accused were identified as Md Javed, Nurul Alam, Suman Mollah, Harun Or Rashid, Tapan Chandra Sarker, Mintu Das, Arsal alias Russel, Faruk alias Bullet Faruk, Md Sohel, and Md Babul.
According to the prosecution, cop Abdul Kaiyum and other police members came under attack by a snatchers’ gang in the Ambagan area under Doublemooring thana when the police tried to prevent a snatching attempt.
Kaiyum and three other policemen were injured during the attack. Later, Kaiyum, who sustained serious stab wounds, succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.
The court examined the statements of 14 witnesses before finalizing the verdict, court sources said.
