ICT grants first bail in July Uprising case

DHAKA, Jan 11, 2026 (BSS) – The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 today granted bail to Awami League leader Humayun Kabir, an accused in a case filed over the alleged crimes against humanity committed during the July 2024 mass uprising, subject to several conditions.

This is the first such order passed in a case filed over the brutal crimes committed during the July Uprising.

“The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, passed the order allowing the plea filed by Kabir’s counsel, citing that the accused has long been suffering from liver cirrhosis,” said prosecutor Md Mizanul Islam.

The senior prosecutor said the tribunal imposed several conditions. Under these conditions, the accused must provide his residential address. He will not be allowed to make any statement through the media or on social media platforms. He will not be permitted to change his residence without informing the investigation officer and the registrar of the tribunal, and he must not influence the witnesses or tamper with evidence of the case.

“If any of these conditions are violated, the bail will be cancelled,” the prosecutor added.

A total of four people were arrested in connection with a case filed over crimes against humanity committed in Lakshmipur during the July–August Uprising. Among them is Humayun Kabir, who was the president of the Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila Awami League and chairman of the Char Ruhita Union Parishad.

He was arrested in August, 2024, from Dhaka and was in jail since then.
