DHAKA, Jan 08, 2026 (BSS) - The Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and the DSE Brokers Association of Bangladesh (DBA) today organized a memorial meeting and prayer session (Dua Mahfil) to honor the life and contributions of the former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson, Begum Khaleda Zia.
Held at the DSE Multipurpose Hall, the event brought together top regulatory officials, including BSEC Chairman Khondoker Rashed Maqsood, DSE Chairman Mominul Islam, and representatives from various capital market institutions.
During the session, speakers highlighted the pivotal role Khaleda Zia played in shaping the nation's financial landscape.
DSE Chairman Mominul Islam stated that the foundation of Bangladesh’s market-based and private-sector-led economic development was established during her administration.
He noted that the wide-scale expansion of the private sector, which began in 1991, continues to benefit the general public today.
Furthermore, he emphasized her role in bringing discipline and institutional structure to the capital and financial sectors.
DSE Managing Director Nuzhat Anwar recalled Khaleda Zia as a visionary leader, specifically noting that the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) was formed in 1993 under her government.
This move was instrumental in strengthening the institutional framework of the country's stock market, she added.
She also pointed to the 1994 national award ceremony for top DSE-listed companies, where the former Prime Minister’s presence served as a landmark example of state recognition for the corporate and industrial sectors.
Saiful Islam, President of the DBA, described Khaleda Zia as a humane politician who remained committed to the interests of the country despite numerous challenges.
He credited her with opening the capital market to foreign investors in 1991, a decision that initiated a new chapter for the sector and paved the way for the modern capital market seen today.
The memorial also touched upon the deep emotional connection the late leader held with the public.
DSE Director Minhaj Mannan Emon remarked that the spontaneous participation of millions at her janaza was a testament to her place in the hearts of the people, calling it a unique example globally.
Riyad Mahmud, President of BAPLC, added that Khaleda Zia had become an inseparable part of the country’s social and family fabric, transcending her role as a political leader.
The event concluded with a request for prayers from the late Prime Minister’s nephew, Md. Shams Iskander, on behalf of her family. A special prayer was held for the salvation of her departed soul, and participants expressed their deep condolences to her grieving family members.
