CHATTOGRAM, Jan 7, 2026 (BSS) – A court here today, in absentia, sentenced former mayor Nurul Absar to one year in prison for embezzling funds from the development budget of Cox’s Bazar municipality.
Judge of the Chattogram Divisional Special Judge’s Court Mizanur Rahman also fined him Tk 1,099,700; in default, he will have to serve another six months in jail.
According to the prosecution, on October 20, 1984, Tk 1,57,520 was allocated as a grant for the development of Cox’s Bazar municipality by the then President Hossain Mohammad Ershad. It was alleged that Tk 1,099,700 was embezzled from the allocated funds.
A case was filed against Nurul Absar in this connection. The Anti-Corruption Commission handled the case.
