Dhaka, Jan 7, 2026 (BSS) - The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested an accused from Mohammadpur area in the murder case of Liza Akhter, who was shot dead during the anti-discrimination student movement in Dhaka's Shantinagar area.
The arrested suspect has been identified as Mahtab Hossain Rudra (25), son of Kahidur Rahman and Maseda Begum. He hailed from Rameshwar Sharma Village under Ulipur upazila of Kurigram district.
Rudra was arrested around 2:30 am today from Nabinagar Housing area under Mohammadpur Police Station in the capital.
Special Police Super of CID (media), Md Jasim Uddin Khan confirmed his arrest.
According to CID officials, Rudra was detained by a joint operation team of CID's Dhaka Metro South Unit and LIC Branch following secret information. He had been absconding since the incident, which occurred one year and five months ago.
The incident took place on July 18, 2024, at around 5:00 pm, when students and public were attacked during the anti-discrimination student movement at Shantinagar intersection and Siddheshwari New Circular Road areas under Ramna Police Station.
During the violence, Liza Akhter, who was standing on the balcony of a flat on the 14th floor of Kanifer Tower, was hit by a bullet.
She was rushed to hospital in critical condition and later died on July 22, 2024 while undergoing treatment at Popular Hospital in Dhanmondi.
Following the incident, Ramna Model Police Station Case No. 01, dated September 5, 2024 (AD), was filed under Sections 143, 147, 323, 307, 302, 114 and 34 of the Penal Code, along with Sections 3, 4 and 6 of the Explosive Substances Act, 1908.
Initial investigations revealed that Mahtab Hossain Rudra, along with local Awami League leader Mostafa Zaman Popy and several pro-Awami League activists wearing helmets, allegedly took part in violent activities aimed at suppressing the movement.
CID officials said the case is still under investigation and further legal action will be taken after completion of the probe.
