DHAKA, Jan 3, 2026 (BSS) - Experts and city officials today underscored the need for joint initiatives involving the administration, specialists and citizens to effectively tackle the growing mosquito threat in the capital, stressing science-based planning and increased public awareness.

They said although the presence of dengue-carrying Aedes mosquitoes is currently low, the population of Culex mosquitoes is on the rise and could peak by March, warning that timely and coordinated measures are crucial to prevent a worsening situation.

The observations came at a discussion titled "Mosquito Menace and Public Sufferings," organized by the Dhaka Utility Reporters Association (DURA) at the Sagar-Runi Auditorium of Dhaka Reporters Unity.

Former DURA general secretary Shahjahan Molla presided over the event, while DURA general secretary Zahirul Islam conducted the session.

Speaking as the chief guest, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Chief Health Officer Dr. Nishat Parveen said efforts by the city corporation alone are insufficient to reduce dengue and mosquito nuisance.

"Every citizen must keep their homes and surroundings clean and remain vigilant. We are working at the field level, but success is not possible without public participation. Together, we can achieve a mosquito-free Dhaka," she said.

Jahangirnagar University zoology professor and entomologist Dr. Kabirul Bashar said mosquito problems in Dhaka have become structural and scientific rather than seasonal.

"Strengthening surveillance activities and using scientific data can bring the situation under control, while citizens' responsible role remains crucial," he added.

Urban planner Dr. Md. Ariful Islam stressed the importance of long-term solutions through planned urbanization, improved drainage systems and effective waste management.

DSCC Assistant Health Officer Md. Sadman Sakib said a month-long special programme has been launched in anticipation of a possible rise in Culex mosquitoes, including ward-based activities and awareness campaigns.

Dhaka Reporters Unity General Secretary Mainul Hasan Sohel also urged both authorities and citizens to play active roles in controlling all forms of mosquito menace in the capital.
