CHATTOGRAM, Dec 29, 2025 (BSS) – Mayor of Chattogram City Corporation Dr. Shahadat Hossain has emphasized the need to renovate and preserve the Shaheed Zia Memorial Museum in Kazir Deuri for future generations. The museum is dedicated to the memory of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, Bir Uttam.
Dr. Shahadat made the remarks during an inspection of the museum, which was damaged in the recent earthquake. During the visit, Arpita Das Gupta, Administrative-cum-Security Officer of the Zia Memorial Museum, briefed the mayor on various issues facing the building.
The mayor later told reporters that the museum, being quite old, has developed cracks in its walls, beams, and pillars due to earthquakes. He has already discussed these concerns with the executive engineer of the Public Works Department, the Director General of the Bangladesh National Museum, and senior ministry officials.
Dr. Shahadat called on the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, other government ministries, and service-oriented organizations in Chattogram to collaborate on preserving the museum.
Highlighting the historical significance of the building, he noted that it was where President Ziaur Rahman declared Bangladesh's independence and initiated the Liberation War. He also mentioned that President Ziaur Rahman was martyred at the Circuit House in Chattogram on May 30, 1981.
“It is our collective responsibility to preserve the Circuit House, which holds important memories of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman,” the mayor said, expressing hope that restoration work on the museum would begin soon.
He emphasized the importance of educating the new generation about the history of the Liberation War and the invaluable contributions of President Ziaur Rahman.
The mayor was accompanied by officials from the Public Works Department and the museum during the visit.
