CHAPAINAWABGANJ, Dec 15, 2025 (BSS) - Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered four pistols, nine magazines and 24 rounds of ammunition during a special operation in Shibganj upazila of the district on Monday morning.

The weapons were seized from Gopalpur area of Manaksha union, about one kilometre inside the Bangladesh border, confirmed at a press conference held at the 53 BGB Battalion headquarters in Chapainawabganj in the afternoon.

Addressing the media, BGB-53 Battalion Commander Lt Col Mostafizur Rahman said border patrols, check posts and intelligence surveillance have been intensified following the shooting of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi on December 12.

He said recent intelligence reports indicated that miscreants were planning to smuggle firearms into Bangladesh through the Chapainawabganj border to create instability ahead of the upcoming national elections.

Based on this information, a special operation was launched around 9:00am in the area under the jurisdiction of Manoharpur Border Outpost (BOP).

During the operation, BGB personnel signaled a motorcycle with two riders to stop. However, the suspects attempted to flee, changing direction and leaving behind a bag. Upon searching the bag, the patrol team recovered four US-made pistols, nine magazines and 24 rounds of bullets wrapped in black polythene.

Efforts are underway to identify those involved, BGB officials said.
