CHATTOGRAM, Nov 21, 2025 (BSS) - Police today arrested Abu Bakkar Chowdhury, 50, an associate of former Awami League lawmaker Mohiuddin Baccu, on charges linked to attacks on the anti-discrimination student movement in the port city.
The Detective Branch of Chattogram Metropolitan Police detained Abu Bakkar, son of late Bochan Mia and a ward-level Awami League leader known to be close to fugitive former MP Baccu.
According to DB officials, he was arrested in a case filed with Chandgaon Police Station over attacks and gunfire targeting students and protesters during the July movement. He was later handed over to Chandgaon Police Station.
According to case documents, on March 18, a man named Ejaz Khan filed a case accusing 53 Awami League and Jubo League leaders. The case also mentioned former MP Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, former MP Mohiuddin Baccu, former mayor A J M Nasir Uddin, and around 200 unidentified individuals.
The complaint stated that on July 18 last year, during the student-led anti-discrimination movement, the accused attempted to kill protesters by launching attacks and firing shots, which led to the deaths of three people.
Chandgaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge Jahedul Kabir said DB police handed over Abu Bakkar as he is a named accused in the case involving attempted murder and opening fire on protesters.
