DHAKA, Nov 12, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today allowed bail to three people, including retired High Court Division Justice AFM Mesbah Uddin in a case lodged by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), for causing a loss of Taka 741 crore to the government by taking two faulty EgyptAir aircraft on lease for the national flag carrier Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
Justice AFM Mesbah Uddin was one of the directors of Biman board at the time. The two other people, who were given bail in the case, are - former Biman Board of Directors chairman Air Marshal Jamal Uddin Ahmed and director Fazle Kabir.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Faiz passed the order as the they surrendered before the court and pleaded for bail.
The same court on November 5, 2025, issued arrest warrant against Justice AFM Mesbah Uddin and six others in the case. The court had passed the order, taking formal charge filed against 18 accused, into cognizance.
The Anti-Corruption Commission on February 6, 2023, filed the case.
According to the case statement, in 2014, Biman Bangladesh Airlines took two Boeing 777-200ER aircraft on a five-year lease from EgyptAir. One of the aircraft's engines broke down in February 2015, shortly after flights began.
To keep it operational, Biman rented another engine from EgyptAir. A year and a half later, the remaining engine also failed, prompting Biman to lease yet another engine from the same company.
That engine too became inoperative later and it was sent to a US company for repairs without any fixed delivery schedule. As a result, Biman had to pay both EgyptAir and the repair company, causing the state a loss of Taka 741 crore.
