DHAKA, Nov 6, 2025 (BSS) - Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) National Standing Committee member Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain today alleged that misinformation has been spread against the BNP regarding various state reform activities following the July uprising.
He said, "Due to this misinformation spread in the name of the BNP concerning reforms, some people say that we do not want reforms. My question is- 'If we don't want reforms, then who did?' Our party has cooperated with the commission formed by the interim government to carry out reforms by holding meetings with them for so long and has made considerable compromises. Many points in the July Charter are consistent with or equivalent to the 31-point framework for state reform announced by the BNP."
Khandaker Mosharraf made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the unveiling ceremony of the book titled "Tarique Rahman Politics and Policy."
Dhaka Forum organized the event at the Hotel Sheraton in Banani.
Former DU VC Prof Anwarullah Chowdhury presided over the event while BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury spoke as the key speaker.
Dr Mosharraf said, "We announced the 31-point programme for state reform even before this government came to power. Before this, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman announced the 19-point programme and Begum Khaleda Zia announced 'Vision 2030'. We have always spoken in favor of reforms."
The senior BNP leader then highlighted the leadership qualities of Tarique Rahman, saying, "Tarique Rahman became the acting chairman during our party's extreme crisis. With our cooperation and his foresight, his dedication, love, and patriotism for the country and the nation, he has correctly led us up to this point, even from distant London, as a true son of this soil."
Mentioning the demand for the trial of all killings over the last 15-16 years, he said, "We demand the trial of all extrajudicial killings that have occurred over the past 15-16 years, including all the injustice, oppressions, forced disappearances, murders, and those that took place during the July uprising."
He expressed concern about conspiracies regarding the election, saying, "Some people are now conspiring about the election. This conspiracy aims to either delay the election or cancel it. Additionally, some individuals are trying to create various other crises here by turning non-issues into issues."
"There is no alternative to an election for establishing democracy in the country. It must happen, whether today or tomorrow. We believe this government will organize a fair election next February and step down by properly handing over power to the winning party," he added.
Dr Mosharraf dismissed the demand for elections under the Proportional Representation (PR) method as illogical, saying, "Many are demanding elections under the PR system, but they don't explain why PR is necessary."
"If elections are held under the PR system, there will often be crisis in government formation in the country. If a party gets 40 percent of the votes, they will receive 120 seats. A government cannot be formed with only 120 seats. In this method, the people will not get their own representatives; they will get party representatives. This is never acceptable," he added.
In his speech, Amir Khasru said, "The BNP wants to build a political and economic system where public participation and equal opportunities for all are ensured. We are committed to making the country self-reliant by increasing investment and creating employment opportunities."
Regarding Tarique Rahman, he said, "Through the beacon that Tarique Rahman is carrying forward as a politician, it will be possible to liberate and empower the people of the country."
Amir Khasru also warned that the BNP will not tolerate any kind of foreign interference in the internal affairs of the country.
Adviser to the BNP Acting Chairman, Dr. Mahadi Amin, Chairman of the Nationalist Democratic Movement (NDM) Bobby Hajjaj, former DRU president and BSS Special Correspondent Morsalin Nomani, Joint Secretary of DU Chatra Dal Abidul Islam Khan and Convener of Chhatra Dal Bijoy Ekattor Hall Tanvir Al Hadi Mayed, among others, spoke in the event.
