Two-day ‘Sachin Fair’ begins in Cumilla

CUMILLA, Oct 30, 2025 (BSS) – Two-day long Sachin Fair, in memory of legendary singer of the subcontinent Sachin Dev Burman, began today at his ancestral house located at Dakkhin Chortha in the district town.

Deputy Commissioner Md Amirul Kaiser inaugurated the event. Earlier, a colorful rally was brought out from Rajganj Yusuf High School that ended at Sachin’s house parading various roads of the town.   

People from all walk of life, including students, teachers, cultural activists, artists and journalists, took part in the rally.

After inauguration of the fair, the deputy commissioner visited different stalls.

In his speech, the deputy commissioner said this event is important to introduce Sachin Dev Burman to the next generation as a proud son of Cumilla and to remind them of his cultural contributions. 

He also mentioned that the district administration will take initiatives to further expand the scope of this fair. 

Additional Deputy Commissioner Md. Saiful Islam presided over the meeting, while Cumilla Government College Principal Nurur Rahman Khan and Additional Police Superintendent Saiful Malik addressed it as special guests. 

The discussants were Cumilla University Professor Dr. Md. Moniruzzaman, writer and researcher Professor Shanti Ranjan Bhowmik.

The convener of JASAS Cumilla city unit Manjarul Alam Bhuiyan, Sachin researcher Jahangir Alam Imrul, cultural organizer Nasir Uddin, composer and lyricist Jabed Ahmed Kislu, among others, addressed it. 

District Cultural Officer ATM Kamran Hasan, In-Charge of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Institute Cumilla Center Md. Al Amin, JASAS Cumilla South District Convener Sirajul Islam Milon and other local cultural figures were present at the event. 

After the discussion, a pleasant cultural program was performed. 

This year, 15 traditional stalls have been set up at the fair, where local handicrafts, books, cultural heritage and products are being exhibited. 

Sachin Dev Burman was born on October 1, 1906 in Dakkhin Chartha, Cumilla. Later, he moved to Kolkata and in 1944, to Mumbai. 

He gained fame as a renowned artist in the music world of the Indian subcontinent. He has a large number of popular songs. He made a special contribution to music direction in Mumbai films and received various honors. 

He passed away on October 31, 1975. 

Since 2018, the Cumilla district administration has been organizing the 'Sachin Mela' to mark his birth and death anniversary in October. 

This time too, the memory of this legendary artist is being remembered with respect in Cumilla through this two-day event.
