DHAKA, Sept 28, 2025 (BSS) - Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) today celebrated its 54th anniversary as ‘Air Force Day’ amid holding various programmes.
As part of the programmes, documentary show, special doa and monajat, and feast (pritibhoj) were organized at different messes at all air force bases and units including Bangladesh Air Force Contingents (BANAIR) deployed under UN Peacekeeping Missions, said a release of Inter Services Public Relation Directorate (ISPR) this evening.
Moreover, a combined feast (pritibhoj) was arranged at Bangladesh Air Force Base Bashar, Tejgaon, Dhaka in presence of all BAF members in Dhaka area and former Chiefs of Air Staff, it said.
BAF started its indomitable journey on this day during the Great Liberation War in 1971. The valiant freedom fighters of Air Force actively took part in the Liberation War along with the people from all walks of life.
Air Vice Marshal Bir Abdul Karim Khandker, Bir Uttam, (retd) served as Deputy Chief of Staff during the Liberation War. Valiant BAF members successfully performed many important tasks including the role of Sector Commanders.
Moreover, Air Vice-Marshal Sultan Mahmud, Bir Uttam, (retd) acted as Officer Commanding of ‘Kilo Flight’.
The necessity of forming an independent Air Force was strongly felt during the dreadful days of blood-shedding Liberation War to take control over the situation, the ISPR mentioned.
For achieving the noble goals, BAF started its journey on September 28, 1971 named ‘Kilo Flight’ with one Otter aircraft, one Dakota aircraft and one Alouette helicopter.
The unit was comprised of 57 members including Bengali pilots, airmen of technical trades and civil aviators.
The ‘Kilo Flight’ conducted more than fifty successful air attacks during Liberation War which played significant role for expediting our ultimate victory, the ISPR added.
