NEW YORK, Sept 26, 2025 (BSS) - Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer Syeed Abdullah Muhammad Taher today said his party is preparing for the elections to be held in February.
He said this while talking to reporters at Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York after joining the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.
Replying to a question, Taher said, "A possible date for the elections has been announced saying it will be held in February next. We all agree with it. We are also preparing for the polls".
But before that, he said there are some important issues that need to be resolved.
"For example, the July Charter, we have agreed on it. But if it is not implemented, there will be no reality of agreeing there," the Jamaat leader said.
He said, "We do not see any reason to disagree with what the chief adviser said about the elections in the speech he delivered at the UN."
Praising the Chief Adviser's speech, the Jamaat leader said, "The speech the Chief Adviser gave at the UNGA session was excellent”.
He also said, "What is wonderful or exceptional is that for the first time, stakeholders from the main political parties were accompanying a head of government. I have welcomed this exceptional initiative."
Regarding proportional representation (PR), Taher said Jamaat-e-Islami wants PR in both houses.
"We are making our demands. Hopefully the government will accept those as it is the government of people. And we will participate in the February polls," he said.
Jamaat leader Mohammad Nakibur Rahman was present.
